Artist Statement

The pattern and texture in these mixed-media floral paintings are inspired by my love for textile design.  These paintings focus on the decorative influence of William Morris and the arts and crafts movement, as well as patterns from the Orient, Morocco and Mexico.  I am constantly studying pattern and design found in fabric, rugs, tiles and papers.  My paintings emerge through a process of additive and deductive layering of paint which creates their multidimensional appearance.  The creation of my paintings is focused primarily on process, and the floral patterns emerge into a complete painting through an extensive of push and pull of paint that reminds me a great deal of weaving.   I never know what the final result will be and I am always surprised by the painting that seems to find its way out of the layers of paint and charcoal.
